Selling for good?

The world is full of what I would consider negative marketing. This includes ads for unhealthy food, addictive behaviors, and other hedonistic pursuits; as well as scam-artists selling faulty products.

This negative marketing casts a dark shadow on sales and marketing, which is partly why it took a while before I became comfortable selling. It took significant reflection and analysis before I could try to persuade someone to make a purchase without any twinge of guilt.

Ultimately, I came up with two simple questions that I ask myself as a sanity check:

  1. Would the potential customer be happy with their purchase, should they choose to buy what I’m selling?
  2. Would the potential customer buy from me if they knew what I knew?

If either answer is no, then I stop before I even start.

If they’re both yes, then I’m doing the potential customer a service by giving them the information they need to make an informed decision.
