Letting the other side go first in a negotiation is dangerous.
If you’re vulnerable.
The main concern is that this gives the other party an opportunity to frame the discussion.
We’re used to haggling – “The price is $100…I’ll give you $50…Ok let’s settle at $75.”
In these situations, going second is a handicap.
But not if you come into the negotiation with a good understanding of the situation and the confidence to follow through.
If you know a given item isn’t worth more than $50 to you, there’s only upside in letting the other party go first. It doesn’t matter if they start at $51, $100, or $1,000 if you can confidently stand by your research. You get the price within your range or you walk – simple as that.
But there’s almost unlimited upside in letting the other party go first.
What if they start at $49, or even $30?
That’s free money in your pocket.
