I recently caught myself in a foolish line of thinking.
I had the option between spending free time working on my latest basement renovation project or enjoying downtime with people I like to be around.
My initial reaction was that I had to work. My project is taking longer than I had originally estimated, and it seemed like I needed to make up for that by grinding away.
But then I took a step back and thought about the big picture.
Why do I want to finish the project?
I came up with two main reasons:
- I want my basement to be presentable. I want to be able to entertain and to spend time with my friends and family members down there.
- I look forward to the opportunity to spend my downtime relaxing rather than being stuck working in the basement.
Now compare that to my recent situation.
I had the opportunity to enjoy my downtime relaxing with people I want to be around or I could work on my basement – so that sometime in the future I would have the opportunity to enjoy my downtime relaxing with people I want to be around.
Basically, I could spend my life how I want to now, or I could do something else so that I hopefully had the opportunity to spend my life how I want to at sometime in the future.
When I thought about it that way, the decision was easy.
The basement could wait.
