The skills that make a good player are the same as those that make a good coach.
A good individual contributor isn’t necessarily going to make a good manager.
A good follower doesn’t make a good leader.
We tend to promote based on past success. We see who does well in their current role, and we assume that they’ll do well with more responsibility – even when the characteristics that define success in the new role are completely different than what had made that person successful in the past.
Past success is sometimes a good indicator of future success, but what got you here won’t always get you there.
