Walking the walk

If the objective of mindfulness is to improve our experience in the world, our ability to remain calm in a dark, quiet room with our eyes close doesn’t prove much.

So why not try a fun experiment?

Pick one of your least favorite situations – the type that is almost guaranteed to get your blood boiling – and try to go about your business while remaining calm. Try remaining in the moment and focusing on the positive.

For example, a trip to a crowded grocery store can be infuriating. But only if we let it. Rather than worrying about the time we’re “wasting” and all of the “rude” people around us, we can make the decision to find peace within ourselves.

It’s all academic nonsense until we can actually put it in practice.

  1. Currently practicing this exercise in a meeting that generally “boils my blood.” Thanks for the encouragement.
