Thoughtful ambition

There’s a fundamental contradiction at the center of journey through life.

We always want more. Personally, I want to be in better physical and mental shape, in a better financial position, better to the people around me, and better in the way that I impact the world.

But it’s counterproductive to pursue any of these goals at the cost of my well-being.

The secret comes in our ability to stay hungry while still being happy with where we are.

It’s healthy to strive for better, but not at the cost of today.

I want to be fit, but not if it means I can never enjoy another ice cream cone. Just like I want to be wealthy, but not if it means I have to suffer for the next 5 years tracking every penny.

Sometimes it’s worth taking a step back to get some perspective, particularly once we realize that we’re aiming for moving goalposts (“fit” is never fit enough, just like “wealthy” is never wealthy enough).

It isn’t worth pursuing a goal if that goal comes with a commitment to be miserable until we achieve it.

  1. Brandon, back from my vacation and excited to dig into all these posts. First thoughts on this one are “yes I 100% agree.” I think the best way to balance all of these goals is to have a circle of people in your life to help you along the way. I know this has been my experience!
