The cutting room floor

One of the most challenges part of writing and similar creative pursuits is the editing process. Particularly when we realize that we need to make cuts.

A given piece of content should be no longer or shorter than it needs to be. Anything that doesn’t serve a purpose should be cut.

Unfortunately, that means that much of the material in the first draft shouldn’t be included in the final copy.

It’s painful to erase something we’ve created. Just try deleting unnecessary pictures on your phone and you’ll know what I mean.

But the difference between effective and ineffective writing often comes down to the amount of “fluff” that makes the final cut.
