“That’s Bad”

What does it mean when someone tells you that your work is bad?

What does it mean if they don’t like your writing, your cooking, or the service you provide?

Does it mean that your work is in fact “bad?”

I don’t think so.

I tend to dislike overtly fancy things, so if you put me in an overly high-class restaurant, odds are I won’t enjoy the experience as much as others might.

Does that mean it’s “bad?”

Of course not.

As Seth Godin likes to say, it’s just not for me.

The feedback we get about individuals disliking our work doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily bad. It might be, and if we get enough data points in that direction, then it could be a good indication that’s the case, but one negative review by itself?

That’s just one person saying that what we did isn’t right for them.
