Taking a breath

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is take a step back.

When we’re hit hard emotionally, it’s rarely a good idea to react quickly. Unless someone is bleeding out or time is otherwise acting against us, there’s rarely a good reason to react out of impulse.

Most situations can wait however long it takes to calm down. Sometimes that’s overnight, sometimes it’s 10 minutes, or sometimes it’s simply 30 seconds.

However long it takes, the discipline to recognize when we’re acting out of impulse, and to take a step back, can save both us and those around us a world of heartache.

The important thing to remember, however, it to use time as tool, not as a couch.

Waiting until we’re in a better state of mind before we act is noble. Simply procrastinating and avoiding a decision is the opposite.
