Subject to Change

All of my opinions are subject to change.

Not because I don’t believe in what I’m saying as it comes out of my mouth. Not because I’m a hypocrite, or someone who is unwilling to take a stand for the things I care about.

But because I know that my future experiences will provide insights that will make me revisit things as I understand them now.

There’s a natural desire to be consistent with our past actions. We want to appear as if we know what we’re doing, so it feels wrong to change our minds.

However, if we truly believe that people can learn and grow, then it’s only natural that we’ll eventually change our minds.

As long as our initial opinions were based on solid footing (at least for what we had believed at the time) and we have good reason to make a change, I don’t see any problem with this.

As is commonly recited in Silicon Valley, it’s the ability to have “strong opinions, weakly held.”
