Who would you rather have teach you how to rebound – Shaquille O’Neil or Dennis Rodman?
Shaq is number 15 on the all-time rebounding list. Rodman is 23.
Shaq is 7’1″. While he played, he was almost always the tallest, heaviest, and strongest player on the court. He was one of the best at using his physical talents to his advantage.
Rodman was “only” 6’7″. He was relatively small for an NBA player, particularly for someone who played in the post.
Because he was never the tallest player on the court, Rodman had to be crafty. He learned to read the ball off the rim, position his body effectively, and hustle unlike anyone who has ever played the game.
So who would you rather learn from?
Unless you’re 7’1″ (which I’m not), I’d take Rodman any day.
Physical gifts can’t be taught; we’re either born with them or we’re not. So if we really want to improve at something, we have to focus on the things that we can reasonable learn.
