Sometimes a simple heuristic can go a long way to make decisions easier.
If someone asks me for something and tries to use time pressure to force my hand (“I need an answer today“) then my answer is almost always the same.
If I’m truly not sure about whether I want to take on the request, I’ll say something to the effect of, “I’d be happy to consider this if I can have more time, but if you need an answer today then it will have to be no.”
This does two things:
- Prevents me from making a rash decision and then regretting it.
- Discourages people from using arbitrary time pressure as a manipulation tactic against me.
