Writing it Down

“Put it in an email.”

That was some of the best advice I received in college. My instructor told the class that whenever we had a question or didn’t understand something, she wanted us to construct an email explaing exactly where we were coming up short.

The interesting part was that this practice almost always made sending the email unnecessary.

By the time I had finished writing my email, it often became clear where my confusion was coming from, and I was able to directly address that to solve the problem.

When we’re confused or frazzled, the simple practice of getting our thoughts in order and trying to explain the situation to someone else is often enough for us to solve our own problem.
