One of my focuses over the past few years has been improvement as a communicator – both writing and talking.
As I’ve been on this journey, I’ve come across many effective pieces of advice – how to structure sentences, how to use vocal tonality and pace, etc. But perhaps the most useful piece of advice I’ve heard is very simple:
“Live an interesting life.”
I was initially tempted to push aside the “non-productive” things in my life like traveling, spending time with friends, and doing projects around the house so I could commit more time to honing my craft. But then I realized that the random and fun experiences we have are the things that open our eyes and give us something interesting to say.
The most interesting people to talk with aren’t the ones who are master speakers.
They’re the people who live interesting lives.
