Teaching moments feel like a time to lecture. To point out how poorly things went and to stand on our soapbox.
But there’s a more effective way.
Rather than diving right into the lecture, start with a simple question – “How do you think that went?”
More often than not, we already know when we’ve messed up. We don’t need to be lectured to, we just need to take the time to reflect and brainstorm how we can be better next time.
An added benefit is that this approach actually helps us to get in the habit of learning on our own, even when we don’t have people to point out our mistakes in the future.
